New Academic Programs Create New Opportunities

As Wilkes prepares students for an ever-changing world, the curriculum continues to evolve. With a focus on providing a robust mix of academic choices and helping students build the skills to compete in the job market, the University will launch a bachelor’s degree and minor in environmental studies, a STEM-designated MBA program and a business analytics and AI certificate.

Protecting the Planet

The earth needs passionate, qualified professionals to meet a myriad of environmental challenges. To help address some of today’s most pressing issues, Wilkes has developed a bachelor of arts degree and a minor in environmental studies.

The environmental studies program features coursework in diverse fields including environmental science, sustainability, geology, political science, history and philosophy.

“The new program will emphasize studying the environment from a more multidisciplinary perspective,” says Matt Finkenbinder, associate professor of geology and program coordinator for earth systems sciences. “The goal is to provide students with a broad background in environmental issues to help solve global issues related to climate change, deforestation and land use change, water conservation and pollution, ocean acidification and biodiversity loss, soil management and food production.”

The environmental studies program will advance the University’s commitment to sustainability, promoting environmental stewardship and resource conservation in the community and beyond, while also providing a global perspective on environmental issues. In addition, the program will foster community engagement and partnerships, creating new opportunities for internships and volunteer service.

The environmental studies degree is designed to open new professional doors for graduates with potential careers in the public and private sector including grant writer, policy analyst, urban planner, nonprofit manager, researcher and community outreach coordinator.

Preparing Global Business Leaders

As tech innovation increasingly drives the world’s business landscape, industry needs leaders who possess both technological proficiency and an understanding of business strategy. The STEM-designated MBA program will focus on the analytical strengths of existing courses to provide students with a distinct advantage in the job market.

With the availability of Optional Practical Training (OPT) for up to three years, the program also appeals to international students. OPT, similar to an internship, gives students who hold F-1 visas the chance to gain professional experience in a job related to their academic field.

The business analytics and AI certificate is designed to give students the skills to power decision-making through a combination of data and artificial intelligence. The certificate complements the STEM-designated MBA and prepares students to respond to industry demand.

“As AI and data analytics continue to reshape every industry, these skills are not just desirable; they are essential for long-term success. Our MBA curriculum is designed to do more than teach technical tools. It develops forward-thinking leaders who can harness the power of emerging technologies to drive innovation, solve complex problems and make ethical, strategic decisions,” says Woojun Lee, associate dean and director of graduate programs for the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership. “With these new programs, we are empowering our students to become leaders in AI, business analytics and the next generation of global industries.”
