History of Wilkes University

Founded in 1933 as Bucknell University’s junior college, the institution attracted eager, highly motivated and talented individuals, the vast majority of whom were the first members of their families to benefit from higher education. Bucknell University Junior College thrived through support and encouragement from leading members of the Wilkes-Barre community. Generous donations from local residents, including the stately mansions now used as residence halls and offices, represent the strong tradition of community support characteristic of the region.

In 1947, Wilkes College was chartered as an independent, nondenominational four-year college, with programs in the arts, sciences and selected professional areas. Designated as a University in 1990, Wilkes offers undergraduate degrees and programs in three colleges: the Dr. Bing K. Wong College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Engineering and the College of Health and Education.
